051: One Gay Married Mormon Man’s Attempt at Reparative (Conversion) Therapy – Part 2

Given the new show that has recently aired on TLC, My Husband’s Not Gay, Mormon Mental Health Podcast wanted to rebroadcast the interview Natasha Helfer Parker did in October 2010 for Mormon Stories.

In this 3-part series Natasha interviews one of her earliest clients, “Marcus”: a divorced, Mormon, homosexual man, who came out to his wife after about 12 years of marriage.  Names have been changed to protect anonymity to the family.

Note: The purpose of this interview is not to encourage people to stay or leave the church nor to stay or leave a marriage.  These are all delicate personal decisions and different circumstances will necessitate different solutions.  The purpose of this interview is to share a story.  It is also meant to increase empathy and to reach out to those who may find themselves in similar situations.  It is also important to note that “reparative therapy” has been recently deemed illegal in several states and there is no empirical data to support that reparative therapy works.

In this 3 part interview we discuss the following:
  • Part 2: The therapy process in conjunction with church discipline.
