103: Dealing with Domestic Violence

Natasha Helfer Parker interviews Jennifer White, a clinical social worker who leads groups in regards to domestic violence (DV) in the Salt Lake City area. This podcast is a follow up to the episode: Ecclesiastical Advice Gone Wrong. It will be useful to those who are experiencing some sort of domestic violence in their lives, as well as family, friends or ecclesiastical/auxiliary leaders who are aware of those who need help with this issue. The podcast covers statistics, definitions and different types of DV, why it can be difficult to leave these types of relationships or seek safety, how to start developing a safety plan and suggestions for all parties involved. On a topic such as this that is often dealt within family and community secrecy, and can be deadly to many, it is extremely important that we educate ourselves on how to get help and how to help others.

Jennifer White earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science at Utah Valley University and a Masters Degree in Social Work at Brigham Young University. Jennifer’s career spans a broad spectrum of therapy environments. She has worked with troubled adolescents at a residential treatment setting, adults at the Utah State Hospital and children at a crisis nursery. She also has worked with adults and adolescents in outpatient therapy. She has led group therapy involving the following issues: anger management, substance use disorders, domestic violence, self-esteem, positive psychology, mindfulness and cognitive therapy. She has also taught psychology and social work classes as adjunct faculty at Utah Valley University. She is a member of the Mormon Mental Health Association.
